Yes, I have a question. I had a very serious domestic violence incident ten years ago and received a major closed head injury as a result. It was a transformative spiritual experience.

As soon as it happened, I was surrounded by at least seven spirit guides, and they stayed with me and took complete care of me for over six weeks. I have read that they are shadows of ourselves from past incarnations, but I “felt” them to be “other” than me. It felt like they were assigned to me, and maybe that they were partly people from my past, such as deceased relatives.

How do you see the spirit guides? Are they different from angels?

Dear Soul:

First we must applaud you for seeing what some would use as a crutch for dysfunctional behavior and using it as a springboard for spiritual growth. This must not go unnoticed or appreciated by us and those around you. Let us see if we can help clear up some things for you.

Angels are not “spirit guides” in the sense that you are describing. What was surrounding you at the time of your incident was what we shall call your healing team. They are, as you rightly surmised, assigned to you and ready to intervene and assist at your request. They are most certainly from the angelic realm, and all of the human species have such healing teams assigned to them. They come from different groups as most need healing on several levels, especially during such a traumatic moment in time. There are those from the emotional healing, spiritual healing, and physical healing teams.

Spirit guides are also assigned to you, usually one to a customer, at birth. They have walked as human and usually had many lives in which to gain useful knowledge and experience to aid you. Some are avatars, ascended masters, saints, most certainly christed ones, wise ones, well you can see from what level they come to you. Some come as opposite energies it seems from their assigned ones to offer more balance, and some come with many similar experiences from which their guided ones can dip from their well of experience. By the way, you can ask for a new guide if you just feel you cannot get along with them. Yes, you can. And be assigned another, however this is not true of the angelic teams.

Your guardian angels are assigned to you throughout all of lifetimes from the first experience of your soul as separate from God and taking on its own “personality.” They will be with until you are fully awakened back into your state of oneness. It is sad that someone has written that these wonderful angelic healing teams are shadow selves from some previous human incarnation. But then that is what this journey you call human is all about, isn’t it? Getting to believe what you wish, and then creating a life from that belief.
